Carry-on size limits: 35L vs 40L vs 45L
Most U.S. airlines allow roughly 22 x 14 x 9 inches as a carry-on, which caps out around 45L (Peak Design 45L, Black Hole MLC 45L). A 35L pack (Allpa, Aer) fits nearly every airline including many budget carriers and is easier to carry; 40L (Farpoint, Tortuga, Ruckpack) is the classic one-bag sweet spot. If you fly strict low-cost carriers, check their specific limits — a compressible pack like the Peak Design helps.
Clamshell access beats top-loading for travel
All our picks open flat like a suitcase (full or partial clamshell) rather than loading from the top like a hiking pack. That's the single biggest usability difference for travel: you can see and reach everything at once. The Tortuga and Allpa are the most suitcase-like; the Ruckpack's partial clamshell is the trade-off for its lower price.
Harness, frame and hip belt
At 35–45L fully packed you're carrying 15–30 lb. A real frame and hip belt (Farpoint 40, Tortuga Pro) transfer weight to your hips and matter enormously if you walk far with your bag. Packs without a hip belt or frame (Black Hole MLC, Aer without the add-on belt) are best when your walks are short — terminal to taxi.
Built-in organization vs packing cubes
The Allpa and Black Hole MLC build organization in with dividers; the Aer and Farpoint give you one big cavity that works best with packing cubes. Neither approach is better — built-in dividers are convenient but fix the layout, while cubes are flexible but an extra purchase.
Materials and weather resistance
TPU-coated and laminate fabrics (Allpa, Black Hole MLC, Tortuga's sailcloth) shrug off rain and abuse but can scuff or stiffen. Standard recycled nylon/polyester with DWR (Farpoint, Ruckpack) is lighter and cheaper but less waterproof — the Ruckpack counters with an included rain cover. None of these are fully submersible; electronics still belong in a dry pocket.

What size backpack can I take as a carry-on?+
Most major U.S. airlines allow about 22 x 14 x 9 inches, which corresponds to roughly 45 liters maximum. All seven packs in this analysis are designed to that limit or below, but budget carriers can be stricter — always check your airline before flying, especially with 45L packs.
Is 35L or 40L better for one-bag travel?+
35L (Cotopaxi Allpa, Aer Travel Pack 4) fits nearly every airline and forces lighter packing; 40L (Osprey Farpoint, Tortuga Pro, REI Ruckpack) is the classic one-bag size with room for a week-plus of clothing. If you're unsure, most published testers — and our synthesis — treat 35–40L as the sweet spot.
Do I need a hip belt on a travel backpack?+
If you regularly walk more than 15–20 minutes with a full pack, yes — a hip belt and frame (Farpoint 40, Tortuga Pro) move most of the weight off your shoulders. For short airport-to-hotel hops, packs without one (Black Hole MLC, Aer without the optional belt) are fine and simpler.
Travel backpack or roller suitcase?+
A backpack wins on stairs, cobblestones, public transit and tight connections; a roller wins on smooth floors and heavy loads.
