How We Analyze — The THRYV Research Method
THRYV is a research and analysis desk, not a lab. Our job is to gather the best available independent evidence on a product, weigh it against a transparent rubric, and give you a clear verdict — with our sources shown. Here is exactly how we do it.
1. Define the category and who it's for
We start with a real reader question — for example, 'the best walking shoes for a 12-hour shift.' Every analysis names the audience, the use case and the constraints (budget range, foot type, environment) so recommendations aren't one-size-fits-all.
2. Shortlist real products actually sold in the market
We only include products currently available from major U.S. retailers or the brand itself. No prototypes, no discontinued models presented as current, no invented SKUs.
3. Aggregate evidence from three independent sources
Every shortlisted model is evaluated against (a) manufacturer specifications, (b) independent lab and field testing published by third parties we cite by name, and (c) verified owner reviews aggregated across major retailers. We link the sources so readers can check our work.
4. Score against a fixed rubric
For footwear the rubric is Cushioning, Support & Stability, All-Day Comfort, Traction, Breathability and Value. Each category we cover has its own published rubric so scores are comparable within a category and can't be tuned to a preferred outcome.
5. Assign awards
Only after scoring do we assign badges — Editors' Choice, Best Value, and Best for [use case]. A product wins on merit against the rubric and cited evidence, not on commercial relationship.
6. Re-check prices and stamp 'Last updated'
Before publishing, and on a regular cadence after, we re-check prices, availability and any material changes to the product. Every analysis carries a visible 'Last updated' date so you know how fresh it is.
Independence & transparency
We don't take payment for rankings. We're reader-supported: if you buy through our links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you — this never changes our verdicts. Our composite scores are an editorial synthesis of the cited independent evidence and verified owner reviews, not our own laboratory tests.
